About This Course

Philosophy of the Programme

This programme is grounded in the belief that a sound teacher education course able to yield quality teaching is a product of a teacher who is progressive in their perspective towards the instructional process and values professional development.

Rationale of the Programme

To produce a teacher who is well grounded and is knowledgeable in both content and pedagogical skills required for effective teaching. 

Goal of the Programme

To equip teachers with the necessary skills and knowledge that will enable them effectively conduct the instructional process at a specified level of learning.

Objectives of the Programme

The BEd. (Arts) programme is designed to produce well-grounded professionally qualified graduate teachers, who should by the end of the programme be able to:

  • Adequately impart content to learners at Early Childhood, Primary, Secondary and Tertiary institutions
  • Design, appropriately utilize and manage teaching and learning resources and materialism learning institutions
  • Utilize the various foundations of education
  • Design, develop, and evaluate curricula
  • Plan and implement appropriate programmes for different categories of learners
  • Apply appropriate methods of teaching

Expected Learning Outcomes of the programme

By the end of the programme, the learner should be able to:

  • Effectively teach in the areas of specialization.
  • Employ appropriate methodologies in teaching.
  • Portray creativity and imagination in handling the instructional process in their areas of specialisation.

ACADEMIC REGULATIONS FOR THE PROGRAMME

Duration of the Course

The programme will take a minimum of four (4) academic years (two semesters each) except for those who join under the conditions specified in the Admission Requirements.

Course Requirements

  • The course shall be offered in terms of units
  • Education courses and those of two teaching subjects will be offered concurrently. The course units will be covered in a total of eight semesters (4 academic years).
  • A minimum of (174 units) will be required for one to graduate with a Bachelor of Education (Arts) degree
  • Students will also be required to attend a 6 units 12 week Teaching Practice session at the end of third year

Definitions

For purposes of this programme the following definitions apply:

  • Lecture hour- A lecture hour is equivalent to one (1) contact hour of lectures or two (2) hours of tutorial or three (3) hours of practical work.
  • Credit Factor/ Unit (CF/ CU)- A credit factor/ unit is equivalent to one (1) lecture hour per week for fifteen weeks.
  • Courses Unit- A course unit is equivalent to three (3) credit factors/ units which is equivalent to forty five (45) lecture hours.
  • (C) – Core course
  • (Ce) – Core for Education Students
  • (E) – Elective Course
  • (Ee) – Elective course for education students only
  • (e) – Course done by education students only
  • Core Course: Courses which are central to the discipline of study and must be taken by all learners.
  • Required Course: Courses which are supportive of or beneficial to the programme.
  • A pre-requisite course: Courses which must be taken and completed successfully before one can register for another more advanced course in the same area.

Credit Transfer

Students who hold diplomas from recognized tertiary institutions and wish to upgrade their academic qualifications may be admitted as transfer candidates. Similarly, degree holders wishing to obtain a second degree may be admitted as transfer candidates. Transfer students may apply to transfer some credits from their former institutions. Such credit transfer should fulfil the following conditions:

  • Have official academic transcripts to support the application. 
  • The student must be a bonafide student of the University from which he/she is transferring. 
  • Have a minimum grade of C+ for the course to be transferred. A student should not transfer more than 49% credits.

Requirements

  • Minimum university entrance requirements for the B.Ed. degree programme. 
  • Minimum mean grade of C + (plus) at KCSE or two principals in two teaching subjects and a subsidiary at KCE its equivalent.
  • Diploma holders in Education with a credit and above from a recognized institution will join in the second year subject to the provisions of credit transfer guidelines in the GaU Admission policy (2018). Those with a pass will join in the first year of study.
  • Should have a C+ and above in two suitable teaching subject combination.
