Philosophy of the Programme
Garissa University envisions training and developing graduates who are well equipped with knowledge, skills and competencies that can help through creativity and innovation to shape the future of northern Kenya by pioneering new approaches, broadening horizons and developing new perspectives to ensure that our country will be able to continually hold its own on the global stage. Based on this, the Doctor of Philosophy in Business Management programme in the School of Business and Economics attempts to find solutions to challenges that business and society encounters due to rapid changes in technology and competition. This is informed by the view that well-grounded human resource with cutting edge business knowledge can spur performance, as evidenced by the use of business knowledge, skills and competencies to provide practical solutions in academia, administrative, managerial and research settings to realize transformative change.
Expected Learning Outcomes of the Programme
Upon successful completion of the Doctor in Philosophy in BM, graduands will have acquired knowledge, skills and research abilities to be able to:
- Actively participate in academic leadership, research, and policy development.
- Contribute unique insights and practical solutions to business management-related challenges through their research specialization choices.
- Teach and carry out research in higher education in the field of Business Management.

The Expected Learning Outcomes of the Programme Specializations
- Finance specialization
By the end of the course, a graduate of Garissa University Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) in Business Management programme in Finance Specialization should be able to:
- Evaluate critical thinking frameworks for financial decision making.
- Formulate prudent investment decisions.
- Assess the role of financial knowledge in international finance.
- Formulate models in finance.
- Demostrate ability to apply theory of corporate finance in business management.
Marketing Specialization
By the end of the course, a graduate of Garissa University Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) in Business Management programme in Marketing Specialization should be able to:
- Evaluate marketing theory for goods and services.
- Develop marketing models that can be utilized in business management.
- Assess competitive brands for products and services.
- Formulate relationship marketing strategy.
- Develop marketing strategy that can be used in global markets.
Strategic Management Specialization
By the end of the course, a graduate of Garissa University Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) in Business Management programme in Strategic Management Specialization should be able to:
- Appraise strategic management thinking in business management.
- Evaluate analytical tools and techniques used in management.
- Demonstrate ability to utilize organization theory in management.
- Formulate strategic management models.
- Develop global business strategy models.
Human Resource Management Specialization
By the end of the course, a graduate of Garissa University Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) in Business Management programme in Human Resource Management Specialization should be able to:
- Examine alignment of human resource policies with labour laws.
- Assess challenges and problems in human resource management.
- Appraise strategic human resource management in organizations.
- Evaluate cordial employer-employee relations.
- Analyse the role of theories of HRM in management of workers.
Requirements
- Common Garissa University regulations for the degree, of Doctor of Philosophy shall apply. Any Candidate for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in Business Management must:
- Be a holder of Masters Degree of Garissa University or any other university in any of the following disciplines; Business Management, Human Resource Management, Business Administration and Economics.
- Be a holder of a Masters degree recognized by Senate as equivalent to status of the qualifications in (i) above.
- Holders of executive degree programmes do not qualify.
- Other Admission Requirements
- Applicants who have an undergraduate and master’s degree in business management and have been teaching at the university level for at least five years may on the approval of senate be admitted to pursue the program by thesis only.
