Our History
The Garissa University was established as a constituent college of Moi University on 12th August, 2011 through Legal Notice No. 116, the Moi University Act (Cap. 210A), and the Garissa University College Order 2011. The University become a fully pledged public University on 23rd October, 2017 and the first of its kind in the North-Eastern Region. On 2nd April 2015, Garissa University College experienced one the worst terror attacks. Heavily armed attackers stormed the university campus that morning. Some students were shot at while others held hostage. This heinous and barbaric act resulted to 148 lives being lost and the University was closed. Following the resumption of teaching and learning activities in January 2016 at Garissa University after the closure of the former University College on 2nd April 2015 as a result of the terror attack, only a fraction of the nearly 900 admitted students resumed classes. Since then the University has experienced steady growth in student’s population. Currently the institution has a total student population of slightly over 2000.
